SINGARA CHENNAI!
SINGARA CHENNAI!
Having lived in this beautiful
city, which is a hub of culture, education and entertainment, for the past 17
years, I’ve realized over time that no other city, state or country can equal
the warmth provided by the Gateway of South India, Chennai. One, on observing
will realize that the culture of Chennai is distinctly different from that of
any other city within the nation. Though diverse in terms of population, it is a unique
blend bound by love and support.
Being the fourth most populous metropolitan city of India
and a city undergoing rapid urbanization, almost every street on the roads can
be found enveloped by a variety of buildings. Hospitals, Educational
Institutes, Residences, Restaurants and a variety of public attractions can be
found in various parts of the city. Chennai also has a very effective transport
system. Chennai has thus been nicknamed as the Health City of India and The
Detroit of Asia.
Though a modern city, Chennai still continues to be traditional and conventional in many ways. It is one of those cities in South India that have a right balance of tradition and urbanization. There are women who still wear long saree to women who wear modern western outfits. There are men wearing traditional dhothies to men wearing blazers. There are shops that sell idly dosa which are traditional Chennai foods to pizza hut and McDonalds.

The
city is known for its classical music shows (kacheri). The tamil season of
Margazhi, which commences during mid-December and ends by mid- January is a
very festive and joyous time in Chennai. A number of Indian classical artists
from in and around the city ( even from other states and countries ) render
soul- stirring musical performances. Kalakshetra, which is located along the
beach on the south of the city, is an important cultural centre where
Bharatanatyam is practiced and taught. Theatre is one of Chennai’s strengths
and has been practiced for a number years. A large number of Tamil and English
plays are performed every year around July and August.
Chennai
also has a very wide range of cuisine. Madras filter Kaapi is the best thing
one can have early in the morning, with a hot plate of pongal. Apart from the
regular South Indian street food, one can also find a variety of other cuisines
across the streets of Chennai such as north indian ( samosas) , Burmese (
athos) etc.
Having talked about the culture of Chennai, it is a fact that many
people think there are not many places to visit in Chennai. Little do they
realize the visual feast Chennai provides us. The splash of red and orange
across the sky during the sunset along the seashore is a breathtaking sight to
behold. The myriad temples with their majestic gopurams, the many historic
monuments are all a must visit when one comes to Chennai.
